about

Tsunami of Suns – This song got its name originally back in the myspace days, and at that time was Tsunami of Complaining Bobs. The story was that on the first TFD album, I did a synth lead in the Slendro scale by tuning my keyboard to that and improvising. Slendro is an Indonesian scale (although I used a quote about Scriabin and India as well as tabla for the hell of it) and sounds like a micro-tuned pentatonic scale more or less. So back in the myspace age, my buddy Mike Prescott had written Bob Katsionis to see if he would listen to my keyboard playing and critique it. Bob wrote back and said I sounded like a very good player, but he figured I was more of a pianist because on that track I was bending the notes out of key. I responded by telling Mike to thank him for the words about my piano playing, yet explained that the reason the notes sound out of tune is due to the unique Indonesian scale I had my synth set to, and that I actually couldn’t hit a bad note since the keyboard tuning was set. It was at that time that Bob wrote back to Mike in trademark humor, “Tell Jimmy, no more Indonesian scales or I shall unleash a Tsunami of Complaining Bobs on him!” I thought this was so hilarious I immediately penned this track, which begins with a microtonal sequence, and then explodes into several minutes of bitonality, every exotic scale known to man (well…a bunch anyway…), Pan-chromatic and diatonic clusters, blast beats, and ending with a keyboard shred off that has more than its share of microtonal and quarter note bends. It was a lot of fun and was released as single with that title and story, yet, as with Mad Diesel, it no longer fit the concept of the album.
