Bolshevikian Mythological Creature – Originally this was called Russian Dragon, or Rushin’ Draggin’, because of the tempo modulations throughout the song. We wanted the song to feel as if it was speeding up and slowing down, or Rushing and Dragging, by using tempo changes based on Polyrhythmic formulas such as Elliott Carter would use in his metric modulations, ie common denominators as opposed to random tempo shifts. There is also the use of Stravinsky’s polychords, a LOT of Nicolas Slonimsky harmony and melody happening, Ron Jarzombek’s chromatic alphabet (the speeding up part in the middle spells Bolshevik over and over making a 9 note phrase which is superimposed over another time sig making a polyrhythm), and there are melodic phrases inspired by various Russian composers, as well as violin by Joe Deninzon, who is Russian in heritage.
